Broadway History Society

A Look into The Broadway History Society

The Broadway History Society was formed on the 15th June 2015 and today has over 60 members from the village and local surrounding area. People come together to celebrate Broadway's colourful past through meetings, lectures and talks, as well as a variety of other 'history' themed events, including walking tours to local historical buildings and sites.

The aims of the Society are to promote the understanding and study of the history of the village of Broadway. It provides a dedicated forum for the discussion of issues relating to Broadway's history and it functions to share knowledge of the community and local area.

The Broadway Hotel wins 'Best Hotel' in Visit Worcestershire Awards

Cotswolds Inns & Hotels are delighted to announce that The Broadway Hotel have beaten stiff competition to win the title of ‘Best Hotel’ in the Visit Worcestershire Awards for Excellence.

The Awards were presented yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 20th September) in the beautiful setting of Eastnor Castle with Duty Manager, James Exton and Head Chef, Eric Worger accepting the award on behalf of the hotel. The Broadway Hotel can be extremely proud of their success, having beaten fellow shortlisted hotels Stanbrook Abbey (Callow End) and The Cotford (Malvern) to first place.

The company was launched in 1997 by Michael and Pamela Horton and Paul Davis became the Managing Director in 2015 after 17 years of service, starting as general manager at The Bay Tree Hotel in Burford in 1999.

Local restaurant, Tattersall's Brasserie, within the popular Broadway Hotel, was recently awarded a prestigious second AA Rosette.

The AA Rosette scheme is long-established to recognise different levels of cooking nationwide and Rosettes are awarded solely by AA Hotel and Restaurant Inspectors with no influence from other guides. Their assessments are based on at least one visit to a hotel or restaurant and of all the restaurants across the UK, it is estimated that only 10% are of a standard which is worthy of one Rosette and above.

Tree X-raying at Batsford Arboretum Sparks Interest from BBC Countryfile

The conservation work of Batsford Arboretum near Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, recently sparked the interest of BBC Countryfile upon hearing about two particular projects.

The first involves a lesser-known technique to test and monitor trees within the Arboretum that are showing signs of decay. The technique, known as Tomographing, is a form of x-ray which shows the extent of the decay, the results are used to decipher whether or not the tree has to be felled.

Spring Hill Tower - 1752-1809

Formerly known as Beacon Tower at the turn of the 19th Century, the origins of Broadway’s majestic tower has inspired many elaborate legends behind the purpose of it's construction. The story actually begins half a decade earlier with a fellow known as Sir George William - born to William Coventry as the second eldest son. After succeeding his father in the Earldom to become the Sixth Earl of Coventry in 1751, Sir George William ordered extensive work to be carried out on the dwindling Croome Estate he had recently inherited.
